With temperatures finally warming up, you’re probably ready to get back into gardening. Spring is the
best of the year to plant and harvest. Follow these simple tips to make sure you get the most from your spring gardening this season.
Stock Up on Summer Seeds
Even though summer flowering plants won’t reach their peak until the summer, now is the time to stock up. Pick up your favourite flowering bulbs and seeds, like lilies or gladioli, and get them planted in the early spring. Make sure to include a variety in your garden, so that you can enjoy a vast array of colourful blooms.
Get Your Tools Ready
You can’t plant anything if you don’t have all the tools you need. Now that it’s warmer outside, you should gather all your gardening tools from the shed. You’ll probably need to clean and oil them to remove any signs of rust. Some tools, like trowels and spades, should also be sharpened at the start of the season. Inspect all your tools, and if you notice something is damaged beyond repair, purchase a replacement. Taking the time to do this now will ensure your tools are ready for use when you’re ready to plant.
Scrub the Greenhouse from Top to Bottom
Thanks to your greenhouse, your plants were able to survive the cold winter. Now it’s time to repay the favour by thoroughly cleaning the space. You need to use a disinfecting cleaner to remove any mould, moss, algae, or dirt from the floors and walls of the greenhouse. Even the glass needs to be disinfected. This will protect your plants from disease while allowing more natural light into the room at the same time.
Seek Out Pests
The last thing you want is a colony of aphids destroying your crops. Before you begin planting for the season, be sure to treat your garden for any potentially dangerous pests. Look for signs of slugs, snails, or weevil larvae, and destroy any unwanted pests that you find.
Begin Collecting Rainwater
Rainwater is the most economical and eco-friendly way to water your garden. Install a water butt to collect any rain that falls. Since rain is the scarcest come summer, you want to take advantage of the wetter seasons. With any luck, you’ll gather enough rainwater to get you through the dry months.
Start Composting
Organic matter is a great fertiliser. It’s also easy to create on your own. Consider investing in a compost bin or build one yourself. Continually, fill the compost bin with organic waste, such as vegetable peelings, cut grass, leaves, paper, and even animal manure. Turn the compost each month with a garden fork to help aerate and speed up the composting process. Your plants will get all the nutrients they need from this natural fertiliser.
Clean Up the Beds and Borders
Don’t plant anything until you’ve properly tidied up your flower beds and garden borders. This includes removing any loose debris or leaves until you can see the soil underneath. Cut back perennials and trim away any dead growth. Be sure to toss this material into your compost bin. Weeds also need to be removed. If you want to boost the nutrient content of your soil, add a thick layer of mulch.
