Did you know that the average lifespan of a sofa is between seven and 15 years? That means that as much as you love your furniture there will come a day when it needs to be repaired – whether as a result of general wear and tear or damage.
As well as the need to replace your furniture because it has come to the end of its natural lifecycle, your tastes change over time and what you have liked before may not be quite your cup of tea now. When you go through the redecoration process, you might find that furniture such as your sofa simply doesn’t go with the overall theme and style of the room.
How do you know when it is time to bid farewell to any piece of furniture?
When it is Showing its Age
If a piece of furniture is beginning to show its age in structural areas, as well as aesthetically, then this is your first sign that it is time to invest in something new. While a sofa can easily be given a new lease of life with a simple throw or with a complete reupholstering of the fabric (although it would probably be just as well to invest in a new sofa), the time will call for new furniture.
When the structure is compromised to the point that it is no longer safe for its everyday use, or it has completely broken, this shows that you should have already replaced it. As well as the sofa, units such as shelves and tables that are required to hold potentially considerable weight constantly present a health risk when damaged, especially if there are young children in the property.
At the first sign of wear and tear, you should decide as to whether repairs will be worthwhile or if a new piece will be better for the long-term.
Household Damage
Furniture can be damaged for all manner of reasons and it doesn’t necessarily have to be as a result of any human interference. In fact, the presence of damp in the property is one of the main reasons for damaged furniture if timber is present in its structure. Mould spores will weaken wood as it festers across the surface, while there is another, deadlier, enemy that potentially resides in your home that can damage furniture beyond repair.
The presence of woodworm can be detrimental, as the insect will eat through the timber. This, of course, will leave the structure weaker and weaker the more woodworm feast on the material and, as well as this, can make for an uncomfortable time for anyone sitting on or near an infected piece of furniture. It has been known for residents and guests in households with a woodworm problem to be left with painful bites as a result of the Common Furniture Beatle, which is a type of woodworm, which can leave nasty rashes over affected areas of the body.
When it Just Isn’t Practical
Practicality is a key reason as to why new furniture is needed. For example, you may have moved into a smaller home or have rearranged your living space in a way that it no longer fits or is needed.
When you have a clear vision in mind for your home, don’t change it to accommodate the furniture that you know would be best retired. Make your home exactly how you want it to be.
