12 Interior Decor Tips for Beginners on a Budget

Posted by: Founterior , June 15, 2020

Interior decor isn’t exclusive to huge mansions and creative fanatics. It’s a way to make a house feel like a home by adding style and functionality.

Whether this is your first time living by yourself or you are on a tight budget, there are countless possibilities when it comes to interior decor on a budget. And lucky for you, we’re sharing our top favourites. Take a look.

1, Create a Moodboard

Don’t have the slightest clue about decorating? It’s a good idea to start by creating a mood board. Pinterest is the ultimate platform for all things creative. Create a mood board for colour palettes, furniture styles, lighting fixtures, art ideas- anything and everything that you like. This will help you discover your style and taste for interior decor.

2, Start with Paint

Applying a fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to spruce up any room. And the possibilities are truly endless. You can paint the entire place the same shade or add depth with contrasting colours. You should get your hands on paint samples for free form a local home improvement retailer. By using samples, you can nail down the exact shade that works best for your house.

3, Create a Faux Brick Wall

There is something undeniably rustic and charming about brick walls. If that is something you like, you can create your own faux brick wall. There are exposed-brick patterned wallpapers available, but they don’t offer any dimension. Instead, you can DIY a brick wall with Styrofoam. It will take some effort, but it will be worth it!

4, Invest in Important Pieces

You don’t have to go all out and splurge on a brand new decor piece for your home. However, you should spend on certain items such as a quality bed frame, couch, coffee table, or dining table. These furniture pieces will likely take up the most space in any room. So, they should meet your comfort needs and aesthetic goals.

5, Improve Lighting

Good lighting can immediately make your home look significantly better. Make sure all your windows are unobstructed to let in plenty of natural light. Install overhead lights, lamps, and other lighting fixtures to adequately illuminate your place. Adding more lights may increase your energy consumption, therefore it may be a good idea to take some time out to compare your electricity prices and find a more affordable electricity plan. This will help keep those lighting bills down.

6, Visit Flea Market

Homeware can be quite expensive. But flea markets are a great place to score some unique pieces at a bargain price.

7, Install Floating Shelves

To have an organized and tidy space, you need plenty of storage. Install floating shelves, which offer storage without taking up too much space. All you need is a drill, and you can install them by yourself. Make sure they are levelled!

8, Have Fun with Textures

Introduce texture to your space with cushions, rugs, drapes, and other soft furnishings. Get soft blankets and cushions for the cosiest interiors.

9, Work on the Ambience

Use plants, candles, and diffusers to create a comfortable and inviting ambiance.

10, Use Everyday Items for Art

Art doesn’t necessarily have to be an oil painting. Anything you find aesthetically-pleasing can serve as artwork. If you’re into fashion, get a clothing rack to showcase your favourite clothing items. Similarly, if you’re someone who collects coffee mugs, put your collection on display.

11, Look for Estate Sales

Look for estate sales in your area to discover more high-end pieces at a heavily discounted price.

12, Reorganize

If you already own a lot of furniture and decor items, then something as simple as reorganizing your house can lend it a feeling of newness.

Once you get started, decorating can be quite fun! We hope our tips and ideas help you create a space you love.
