Dear readers we represent to your attention the ultra-lightweight carbon fibre chair that is created by the Dutch designer Marcel Wanders and it is formed around party balloons.
We saw that The Carbon Balloon Chair for the first time on the designer’s retrospective exhibition. The event took place at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum last week.
Taking thae challenge to create the world’s lightest chair, the designer design the chair with weight 800 grams. The interesting thing about this chair is that it is handmade from party balloons, which are filled with compressed air. But this is not everything, then the balloons are wrapped in strips of carbon fibre and then thickened with epoxy resin. This process is used also for the netting for the seat, but here the designer have used a grid of carbon fibre.
The material used for the chair is not accidental. As the designer Marcel love to work with carbon because of its minimization possibilities. The chair impress us with its characteristics. The designer confirm that it requires fewer materials, produces less waste, and is long lasting.
Similar approach is a Wanders trademark. For example, we can comprise this project with breakthrough Knotted Chair. For this project, Marcel used again epoxy resin to reinforce macramé thread that is used for the frame.
On the Stedelijk museum’s exhibition we can see the whole collection of Wander’s work from the very start of his work to the present day. The collection consist of 400 objects and it is located on the museum’s new gallery space. The collection is very diverse, we can see lamps, furniture, wallpaper, cutlery, jewellery, and packaging. The event will be closed at 15 June 2014.
