Nowadays the bathroom is not simply given special attention, but it is becoming bigger and bigger and takes up more space in our homes. Long gone is the time when the bathroom was of secondary importance, isolated from the rest of the home with the only purpose to maintain hygiene, it is now one of the main rooms, occupying more spacious places where we can enjoy longer stays, rooms with big windows which generously let in daylight. More and more often the bathroom ‘gets rid of’ the constraints of the walls and some of its furnishing like the wash basin, the bath tub and the Jacuzzi leave its confines and become part of the furniture in the living room or the bedroom. This is why they no longer look utilitarian, but are more like sculptures which easily become part of different interiors and become the focus of attention. Their shapes are plain and minimalist, they are snow white or in natural, soft, pastel, inspired by nature hues without lacking daring and eccentric ideas. Utilisation, comfort, water and electricity saving are some of the compulsory parametres which all accessories and furniture incorporate.
The advance in technology has turned the bathroom into something more than a luxury spa centre with Jacuzzi, hydromassage, colour- and aroma therapy, steam bath, sauna and fitness. Today the bathroom is the place where thanks to new-generation software built in the mirror or the tub one can get useful information about health, bus or train timetables, to watch films, to talk online, write emails and even work in a pleasant and relaxing environment while having their morning shower.
One thing the bathroom does is to provide comfort and coziness, but it also plays the role of a beautician, personal doctor, diet consultant, meteorologist, an office or a meeting place. This explains why people spend so much time in the bathroom doing different things. Today it is a multifunctional room which everyone uses to satisfy their needs and meet requirements. This is why it should be furnished in order to meet these various needs. This is the reason why both designers and manufacturers select natural materials like stone and different types of wood, try to make it a pleasant and well organised place, to make sure there is enough space for storing objects. The bathroom in 2011 is the room which presents the home. It has been brought to the fore, it is as good as the living room, has a style which matches the rest of the home and provides atmosphere which touches upon the inhabitants’ interests and way of living.
