Your house could be making you sick without you even realizing it. If you have allergies especially. There are allergens all over your house that can make your life fairly difficult.
You clean the house though so you wonder what the problem could be. Well, your house can be clean but still hiding those allergens. It is going to take more than just vacuuming and dusting the furniture.
Once you have your house allergy proofed, then it is a simple matter of maintaining it with not too much extra effort.
In this article, I will go over several ways to keep your allergies at bay by allergy proofing your entire home.
Clear the air
Having air filters is the first line of defense as many allergens float around in the air for some time before they settle on surfaces.
If you already have a filter in every room, make sure that you are changing the filters out according to the manual. Check it to see how often you should be doing this and check them occasionally. A full filter is ineffective and may even start blowing allergens around.
Your ducts should also be cleaned out as they will also be blowing around the allergens and dust. This is something you need to call an Air Duct & Dryer Vent Cleaning expert to do. Have somebody come once in a while to clean these out and keep your air quality high.
Upgrade your vacuum
Your vacuum may be great at getting the carpet and floor clean, but how good is it at trapping allergens?
The ideal vacuum for allergy sufferers should have a HEPA filter bag that traps particles down to the smallest microns.
The bag should be big enough to hold quite a bit of debris so emptying it can be done infrequently. And when it is emptied, it should be as dust free as possible.
Many bagless vacuums cause dust to escape when dumping it in the bin which nullifies any benefit of picking up particles out of the air and off of surfaces.
Get rid of drapes and carpets
Drapes and carpets are like dust magnets. And where there is dust there are allergens. You may love the idea of a wall to wall carpet, but the reality is that it is going to contribute to your allergies.
Likewise with drapes. They collect dust and are difficult to clean making them as bad or worse than carpets.
Go with shades or blinds to keep the light out and maintain privacy without the need for a set of drapes.
Minimize mold
Repair any leaks in your kitchen and bathroom to keep moisture down in the house. You should also try to recaulk any molding in the bathroom where mold may grow if left unchecked. Under your kitchen sink is also a great hiding place for mold so check to make sure there is no moisture there.
When mold spores get in the air it can cause illness even if you aren’t allergic to it.
