This is not an usual elementary school. The interior design of Samuel Brighouse school is astonishing and actually it was an award wining project. Looking at the image above you will definitely feel the spacious interior and outstanding design solutions that the architects incorporated in their work. Large wood straight panels connect the lower floor with the ceiling forming an unique and attractive inner look of the glass facade of the school. On the second floor, there is a long corridor connecting the staircase that comes from the first floor with the classrooms.
On the ground level, there is another hallway connecting the different functional areas in the facility. Pay attention to the sweet colorful claddings that have been used to mark the entrances to the rooms. A stylish staircase leads the teachers, students and their parents to the upper floor where the lessons are being learned. You won’t miss the modern pendants hanging from the floor. Actually, those are used only during late hours since the glass faced provides enough natural light inside.
The main entrance of the school has also some colorful accents. The designers believe that adding those interesting splashes of color can actually stimulate student’s creativity and brain activity. Of course, there we used only “positive” palettes and nuances like red that provoke aggressive behavior have been avoided.
The classrooms are organized not in the traditional way. The desks are forming small tables where 4 students can sit. This is a great idea since it stimulates team work and collective discussion of ideas.
The building has a majestic silhouette. As you can see, modern architectural solutions have been used in order to create a fabulous contemporary construction that will generate leaders of the future.
Outside in the areas of the school, there are several zones separated for outdoor play. Actually, these playgrounds are often used when the weather is sunny and not so cold that the teachers can take all the kids outside. Games are important part of kids’ lives since they develop their skills to socialize and make friends. As you know, scientific researches have proven that people make friends that share similar interests. Games are that part of the day when all the students can express their preferences and views about the surrounding environment that later can become the foundation of finding their new mates in school.
In the image above you can see the inspiring entrance of the school as well as the facade of the canteen. Needless to say, every lunch break there is enough quality food for all the kids.
From this architectural plan you see the distribution of space and the separation of the different functional areas which are:
1. Classrooms;
2. Special education;
3. Students Resource Center;
4. Gymnasium;
5. Multipurpose;
6. Project Area;
7. Administration;
8. Mechanical;
9. Neighborhood Learning Center;
10. Circulation / Washrooms;
11. Storage.
From the two plans above you will be able to see how they are organized in the different levels of the building.
