What is a Ha-Ha Wall
An interesting solution for animals that keep coming into your garden has been found in the far 18th century in England. The answer for the problem is a sunken ditch, or so called ha-ha. It is not something that is hard to construct and at the same time is one of the most effective solutions. The ha-ha is a type of wall concealed in the bottom part of a trench that is deep.
Because of its height the ha-ha wall doesn’t hide the beautiful scenery beyond the owner’s land. At he same time it is effectively protecting it from animals. Nowadays some designers decide to use this type of wall for their projects in regions where the homeowners are in danger of animals that can enter the beautiful lawn in front of the house, for example.
As a part of the garden design, it is a boundary that separates the tamed, domestic functional spaces and the wild and savage, not tearing the natural consequence of landscape views. The trick is that the wall creates a barrier that can’t be seen from the garden which is above. In front of the brick or stone wall there is a slope that is artificially created. Thus, a height of the wall is created and when you are standing it in front of it, outside the garden, you see a wall that is half meter high. On the other hand, if you are standing on the other side, in the garden one, you see that the top end of the wall is smoothly matched with the ground level. The slope in front of the wall is the key element.
In the contemporary garden it is not very common that you find bricks and stones as the only material used for fences. For example, if you want to have a modern looking barrier you can use some Cor-Ten steel for the wall, for example.
Another clever decision is to place a swimming pool, instead of fence, at the end of the yard, if you want to use the ha-ha wall effect. The outer side of the wall of the swimming pool be an efficient barrier itself.
The clever English house owners in the past did something very smart. They decided to use garden landscape that is sweeping right up to the house and the ha-ha wall is the element that allowed them to do that.
