Best Lighting Solutions for Small Spaces

Posted by: Founterior , April 22, 2018

When it comes to decorating a small space, there is often a need for a lot of creativity to make it look and function like a larger room than it actually is. One of the best ways to create a larger looking space, especially when dealing with a basement or lower level apartment, is lighting. This is often the key to any interior design. Because many are looking for that bright, yet homey feel to their lighting, it makes to take some research to see what is best for the space you are in. So let’s begin with the top 3 solutions for small spaces.

1. Recessed Lighting

This is one of the most common ways to create a brighter atmosphere in a smaller space without needing to find space for floor and table lamps. Recessed lighting is (essentially) a single wall or ceiling unit that has been placed inside the ceiling. Often times recessed lighting uses halogen bulbs which are not only more energy efficient, but they also last longer than the average light bulb and can create a wider range of light.

2. Christmas Lights

Yes, that’s right! Christmas can now be part of your décor all year round, but it doesn’t have to look like Christmas is here to stay. This particular option is ideal for a space that is low natural lighting via windows. You’ll need some sheer material or curtains, shower or curtain hoops with a clasp attached, a curtain rod with hanging hardware and waterfall or icicle lights. Before beginning, you’ll want to be sure that you have chosen white or cream lights, and have chosen a spot on the wall where there is an outlet close by. Start by hanging your curtain rod, material and hoops. Once this is complete start attaching your lights the material by the clasps located on your curtain hoops. Once the lights are displayed to your liking, simply plug in and enjoy the soft ambiance! This can also be recreated across any window as well.

3. Track Lighting

Another easy fix to a low, light situation in a small space is picking up track style Designer Wall Lights. Not only will they make a bit of a statement in the room, but they will allow for more light due to the fact that most track light fixtures hold three bulbs or more, but only take up the space of one hanging fixture (electrically speaking). Track lighting is most often seen in kitchens and bathrooms as they need the most light, and may not always have the biggest space for tons of overhead lighting. Again, most track lighting fixtures use halogen bulbs; but there are also some fantastic statement pieces out there that utilize Edison Bulbs, which would add a unique touch to any space. It should be noted, however, that Edison Bulbs will offer a softer glow than regular track lighting would – so if bright is the name of the game, then look into something with a wall dimmer may be a better option.

No matter the space that you are trying to “enlighten”, there is a whole host of options available for any space and any budget. And since most hardware stores now keep track of their stock online, it’s easy to shop in advance to get an idea of what the overall cost could be. Another option is to download a mobile app that allows you to redecorate your current space just by uploading a picture. Once you’ve taken the time to redecorate your space, you can then pop over to a local hardware store and see how to make those design dreams come true.
