How to Create a Nautical-Themed Bedroom

Posted by: Founterior , June 4, 2018

Do you love the sea? If so, you are not alone. The sea is all-powerful. It can kill us just as easily as it nurtures life, yet we are drawn to its magical beauty. Living by the sea is a dream of many people, but you don’t need to have a coastal home to enjoy a nautical-themed bedroom. Here are some clever hacks to turn your boring bedroom into a cute, cozy haven of relaxation.

Back to Basics

First things first, if you want to give your bedroom a nautical theme, it’s a good idea to strip everything out and start from scratch. You can’t attack this project in a half-hearted manner – it won’t work. Instead, you need to carefully plan your theme, starting with the floor and walls.

Carpet is common in bedrooms because it’s warm and soft underfoot. However, carpet is not going to gel well with a nautical theme. After all, how many boats do you know with carpet?

Polished wooden floors are the best choice for a nautical-themed bedroom. Hardwood is best, but if you are operating on a budget, you can use laminate or engineered wood flooring. First, though, it is a good idea to decide on a color for the walls.

Paint Colors

Blue, for obvious reasons, is a popular color for a nautical-themed bedroom. Select a shade of blue you like and use this as your base color for the walls. Pale, grey-blue is a good choice, as is a green-blue evocative of tropical waters. Royal navy blue works well, but it’s a dark color, so use it sparingly, perhaps on your feature wall, or keep it for accessories.

A Captain’s Bed

The furniture on a ship is fixed to the floor and walls, to prevent accidents during adverse weather conditions. Unless you live in an earthquake or tornado zone, you are fairly safe on that score, but to stay true to the theme, it is best to select a Captain-style bed. Look for a bed frame with fixed storage beneath the bed. Beds made from solid wood are beautiful and study. A bed of this type should last a good few years. Choose matching solid wood fitted furniture to match to complete the look.

Soft Furnishings

Drapes don’t really work in a nautical-themed bedroom. Instead, look for fitted blinds, roman or roller. Select a suitable fabric/print that works with your theme. Good examples include an anchor motif, sailing boats, or similar.

Choose bed linens to match your blind – or at least the overall theme. It’s a good idea to add some extra color, such as a complementary shade of crimson red or golden yellow. Both colors work well with all shades of blue.

Add some portholes to your bedroom using round picture frames and sea-themed images. You could even have a go at painting your own scenes! Hang a few painted wooden birds, collect shells and driftwood and arrange them on shelves. You could even add a tropical fish tank.

Finish off your nautical-themed bedroom with ship’s lanterns on the wall and a soft rug on the floor. Whether this is a guest bedroom or your master suite, this theme is sure to go down a treat!
