Discover The 5 House Plants That Are Safe For Your Pets

Posted by: Founterior , March 25, 2021

Plants are a welcome addition to most homes. They are a great way to add some color and to bring the outdoors into your home. In fact, house plants can help to purify the air and make you feel more energetic and positive about life.

Of course, plants need some care and attention, although there are many species of plants that can survive with irregular watering and very little care. But, you should be aware that some plants are toxic. While you can keep an eye on children to ensure they don’t touch these plants, it can be difficult to do the same with your pets.

If you have a dog, cat, or both, you’re going to need to choose one of the following plants that are safe for these animals to chew. You should also consider the pots you use. There are specialist indoor plant pots that are good for the environment and won’t cause any issues to your pets. It’s worth investing in them, you’ll find the pots are much cheaper than a vet bill.

1, African Violet

The African Violet produces stunning flowers in the spring. They are purple or pink and look fantastic. It’s also worth noting that although this plant needs regular watering to keep the soil moist, it can flourish in low-light areas, making it a great choice for your home.

It doesn’t grow any bigger than 12 inches and is completely harmless to your pets.

2, Air Plant

This is a great option if you have pets and/or young children. The air plant, as its name suggests, doesn’t need soil to grow, they literally grow in the air. They do need some indirect light and you’ll have to soak their roots once a week for a minute or two. Other than this they will stay smaller than one foot and look delightful.

However, while these plants are not toxic to pets, your dog will find them tempting to chew on. That means keeping them high enough so they can’t get to them.

3, Watermelon Plant

This plant doesn’t actually produce water melons. But, it does have grey and green leaves which look a little like a watermelon. It’s another plant that doesn’t grow past 12 inches and is happy with medium to low light.

You’ll only have to water this when the top inch of the soil feels completely dry. That’s it, your pets may be tempted but it won’t do them any harm.

4, Ferns

Ferns are a great choice for any home or even the garden. They are colorful and hardy. However, you do need to be a little cautious; True ferns, including the Boston and Maidenhair will flourish indoors in indirect light and they are not toxic to your pets.

Other plants are referred to as ferns, even if they are not in the same family. Some of these, such as the Asparagus fern are toxic to your pets. Check before you buy.

5, Friendship Plant

This plant has potentially the best name of any plant. It is easy to look after and needs very little attention, other than occasional watering.

They have crinkly leaves which are a bright green and can be easily split to create more plants. They are also safe for your pets.
