Interior design tips for making a bold impact in a small space

Posted by: Founterior , February 1, 2021

Whether your home is a city centre flat or a historic terraced building, many properties are guilty of small living spaces. Even if the house itself is large, there is always that one box room that you don’t know what to do with.

Even the smallest houses out there can be transformed into something incredible and lived in fully. In fact, Britain’s smallest house, Quay House in Conwy, Wales, stands at 10ft by 5.9ft and was lived in right up until 1900!

If you are embarking on the task of renovating a room in your home, but you are worried about its size, here are our top tips on how to make a bold impact in a small space.

1, Bold accent pieces

Studies have shown that bold and bright colours can draw your attention and influence your feelings. Yellow might make you feel happy, blue may calm you down, green might bring in the feeling of nature. Choose bold accent pieces to draw attention away from the room’s dimensions, choosing a colour that will really pop.

2, Standout feature wall

You can also apply the same principle to your walls. Choose one wall in the room to be the feature wall and play with textures, patterns, and colours of wallpaper. The feature wall is usually the wall at which the bed sits or where the window is, allowing you to draw all attention to one focal point in the room. Feel free to make it as bold and accessorised as you would like!

3, Play with light

Keeping a room well lit and bright can make a space feel more open and inviting, as opposed to dark and dingy. Don’t feel limited by the fixtures you already have. If you want to keep the full height of the room and therefore are hesitant about low hanging ceiling lights, there are plenty of wall lights for you to choose from instead, which can be incorporated as accents to your room.

4, Add in some greenery

Bringing in some of the outside can extend the room out into nature, making it feel less small. It is also a great way to fill in awkward gaps in your room. This can make you less limited in your choice of accent furniture, as you don’t need to work as rigidly to your room’s full dimensions.

5, Style out your shelves

When you have little floor space, shelves can be great for storage and look super aesthetic too. Using wall-mounted shelves for your books, photo frames, small succulents and candles is bang on trend right now. Using things you already own, you can arrange them all nicely and make a huge impact to such a small space.

When it comes to rooms, size doesn’t always matter- after all, small rooms can be beautiful too. When you start the overhaul of your spatially challenged project, follow these top tips to make sure that you give your small space a bold impact.
