Yep, chlorine. The stinky, eye-stingy stuff they use to keep swimming pools clean is also used to disinfect drinking water. If your tap water is highly chlorinated, you’ll be able to both smell and taste it. Drinking water should be odorless, but chlorine has a distinct smell and tastes slightly bitter. Drinking water is cleaned of actual dirt at water treatment plants, but between leaving the plant and arriving in your tap, it travels through miles and miles of pipes sometimes. Just because you can’t see rust or dirt in your drinking water when it comes out of the tap doesn’t mean it’s not there. There are plenty of ‘healthy’ things that don’t taste great, but water shouldn’t be one of them. Filtered water is much more enjoyable and delicious to drink than water right out of the tap (although some tap water tastes better than other tap water), which makes you more likely to drink more of it.
