Whilst lockdown was a torrid time for many people, it did bring everyone some time to reflect and take up new hobbies. In the UK, one hobby that gained a lot of traction throughout lockdown was DIY and home crafting. We all had so much time to sit and dwell in our homes and that led to people realising that their homes could do with a slight touch up.
Whether it was building a new shed in your garden, constructing new furniture to get your work from home office up to scratch or finally getting around to fixing an old deck chair – which you should’ve done years ago, it seemed like everyone wanted to give it a go.
When taking part in DIY or crafting projects however, safety is above all else the most important thing. Here are our top pieces of equipment to keep you safe throughout your projects.
Protective gloves
A vital piece of equipment for any job is protective gloves, your hands are needed for anything you do so ensuring that they do not get injured in the process is vital. Without gloves, your hands are at risk of abrasions, cuts, heat, punctures and chemicals in some instances.

Safety Goggles
Safety goggles are another key piece of equipment to guarantee your safety during DIY work but choosing the right ones isn’t always easy due to there being many different types depending on the craft.
If you are just doing basic home improvements like nailing together a desk then you may opt for standard goggles which will protect you from any general accidents that could occur. However, if you are welding then you’ll need something a bit more heavy-duty to protect you from the heat, bright lights and hot particles which travel upwards. For this reason, tinted and heat resistant safety goggles will be essential.
Facemasks and Respirators
Breathing in the dust from plastering jobs can be detrimental to your health and can lead to illnesses such as silicosis therefore, masks are necessary for plastering.
You’ll also need a mask when working with paint or resin – especially when your exposure is prolonged. Without a mask, your body may be susceptible to headaches, dizziness and other breathing problems.
