Make your home your own — 4 hacks for personalising your living space

A house becomes a home because of the people who populate it.

But it really takes life when the personality of its inhabitants is expressed in special ways and a unique ambiance is created.

A home that feels ‘lived in’ is a sanctuary for families and wonderfully welcoming to guests.

So if you want to make your home your own, here are four hacks for personalizing your living space.

Man cave/she-shed

As families expand, most household spaces become communal — so it’s hard to claim an area that’s exclusively yours.

Man caves became popular a few years ago to meet this demand — household dens where the man of the house can relax amongst the music and gaming devices that make him feel most comfortable.

And there’s also a female equivalent — she-sheds serve the same purpose in providing an exclusive space for females to express themselves and relax in total tranquillity.

If you’ve got a spare room or unused garden shed, converting for these purposes is the perfect plan.

Art and culture

If a man cave or she-shed just isn’t possible, buying a few choice artworks allows you to decorate walls, desks, and window-ledges with the beautiful objects that most inspire you.

If you’ve got the funds you can splash out on a lavish original from your favourite artist — otherwise, a high-quality print of your favourite piece will suffice.

Whether you brighten up your bathroom with Van Gogh’s sunflowers or turn your settee into a talking point with some Andy Warhol cushions, art transforms your home in awesome ways.

Furniture

Your chairs, tables, and couches are primarily functional and comfy — but they can also help to personalize your property.

A quality chesterfield couch might give your study that certain je ne sais quoi and a well-stocked book case and open fire complete a sumptuous space for any book lover.

But you might feel just as comfortable lounging around on a bean bag — and it’s your right to have at least one chair that’s exclusively yours.

Interior hammocks  or hanging chairs are also another great way to relax and unwind without becoming wet or windswept.

If your partner would like each room to be decorated according to different themes, a little diplomacy might be needed to avoid your home looking like a mismatched auction room — but finding the right furniture, and hammock will really makes you feel at home.

Door mats

Sometimes the simplest household items allow you to express your personality perfectly and personalized door mats are a prime example.

Make your home your own — 4 hacks for personalising your living space

First impression last in most areas of life and your front door’s no different.

So when guests arrive to witness your favourite motivational motto or humorous adage, they’ll immediately feel at ease. And they’ll also wipe their feet — a wonderful double-whammy.

But avoiding controversial messages might be a wise move — unless you’d like unwanted guests to think twice before ringing your doorbell.

These four hacks for personalizing your living space will transform your home into a place you love to return to and guests love to visit.
