Must have tools when you’re renovating a house

2020 gave us plenty of time sat inside our homes and led to a few new hobbies along the way. One of them was home DIY, which has found many a new participant in the past 12 months.

DIY home renovation has been building in popularity for some time now, mainly based on the cost saving benefits it provides to its practitioners. However, it’s also remarkably rewarding once you get up to speed with things, but to get up to speed you need to not only learn the tricks of the trade, but get the tools for it, too.

What does every home DIYer need? Here’s a list of the essentials.

Tape measure

The trusty tape measure – an old faithful whose usefulness can never be doubted. They’re also not a piece of kit you want to skimp on, as there are good tape measures and bad ones – and you tend to get what you pay for.

A good tape measure can be a partner for life, not just the pandemic, so make sure to get a quality, robust number to do all your measurements.

Pliers

If you’re dealing with anything to do with wiring or your electronics, then a pair of electrician’s pliers are a must have. For grabbing a hold of old rusty nails and similar company, some ironworker’s pliers are an essential.

For the typical home renovation, you’ll probably need a few different pairs to have you covered.

Cordless drill

Regardless of what project(s) you have planned, a cordless drill is an essential. Bathroom renovations, kitchen fit out, even putting together some flat pack furniture – the cordless drill is up there for one of the most important tools you need to hand.

Claw hammer

For woodworkers or anything involving fitting and extracting nails, a quality claw hammer is a must have. Claw hammers can also be used for a little bit of demolition work too, but the majority of that is probably best left to its bigger brother…

Sledgehammer

…the bigger brother being a sledgehammer. If you’re doing proper renovation work – as in stripping rooms out and creating entirely new spaces – then there needs to be plenty of ripping down before you build back up again.

A good sledgehammer is quite literally worth it’s weight in these circumstances and represents one of the more fun tools to use as you break stuff with glee.

Ladder

There’s no point in doing half a job if you can’t reach every nook and cranny of your home. A sturdy, safe set of ladders is another everyday companion for typical renovation work.

Cleaning bits

Throughout the renovation process, you’re bound to make an awful lot of mess. A quality broom and an industrial vacuum will go a long way to helping you get rid of it, but cleaning gear generally will be essential from day one to keep your renovation on track.

Safety bits

You also need to look after yourself during projects which are bound to carry at least some level of risk. The safety equipment you require will depend on the job at hand, but a good pair of overalls, safety glasses, a mask and some hearing protection are often required to ensure you’re prepared for the task ahead.

DIY stationary

What do we mean by DIY stationary? Again, it depends on the project, but marking pens and pencils and various forms of tape are often required. You might also want to introduce some design tools for a creative element – spray paint for a wall mural, for example.

Don’t forget extras for your key tools as well, such as the drill bits, nails, screws and the other fixings you require.
