5 Tips to Renovating Your Bathroom

Posted by: Founterior , September 26, 2020

A renovated bathroom can raise your home’s value, be more comfortable to use and improve the ambience of the house.

If you want to renovate your bathroom, here are five tips to help you.

Choose the Bathroom Type

The first thing in renovating your bathroom is to decide on the type. Most likely, you would like to remain with the kind of bathroom that you have but make some changes. For example, you can convert your standard bathroom to a master en suite.

You could convert your wet bathroom to a standard one with a bathroom cubicle. Or you could transform a small bathroom to a master ensuite by getting space from the bedroom or a walk-in closet.

Determine the Extent of the Renovation

The type of bathroom you choose will determine the extent of the renovation. Do you only want to change the tiles or you are renovating the entire room? Decide the scope of the renovation. Remember that the cost depends on the type of renovation, the materials used and how big your bathroom is.

For example, it will cost more if there will be structural work or if you will alter the plumbing.

Decide on the fixtures to use and the finishes. Choose high-quality materials that can withstand high levels of humidity, chemicals and a lot of use.

Determining the extent of renovation will help you to estimate the cost and see if it fits with your budget. You can then get a quotation from a professional to know the exact cost.

Estimate How Long the Renovation Will Take

Will your bathroom refurbishment take one or two weeks? The duration will depend on the extent of the renovation. If you are only doing upgrading of a few fixtures, it can take shorter. This is unlike when you are making structural changes or changing the plumbing from one point to another.

Consult with a professional to determine how long the renovation will take.

Also, the planning phase takes time. It will take time to design the bathroom and to obtain materials and fittings from the suppliers.

Work With Professionals

While many people can claim to renovate a bathroom, not all can do it.

Make sure you are dealing with licenced contractors. In fact, in some states, you will require a licensed contractor for your bathroom renovation. So, check if the contractor is licensed or certified if their work is insured and if they can provide a written quotation.

Check their previous projects to ascertain if they are competent and request for references. Previous clients can vouch for a job well done or warn you in case the contractor has shoddy work.

Set Aside Extra Cash

You should ensure that your bathroom renovation is within budget. However, set aside extra cash, at least 20% of the budget to cushion you in case there are unexpected costs.

One way to ensure you stay within budget is to obtain a quotation from the contractor, and ensure you stick to it. Try not to change the plans midway to prevent from incurring extra costs and extending the completion date.
