Art Studio Space
The designers for LOT-EK were assigned to develop a project and afterwards to make the construction of a new art studio space. The building was made for the purposes of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The completed structure is a home of some of the activities of the museum’s educational programs. It will also be a gallery for a very special and rare exhibitionis
When the time for mooving out came, The Whitney Museum decided to sell its current real estate, which was located near the Madison Avenue location. Thus, a need for a educational space was created. This lack of educational activites was the reason that made the museum’s department in charge to make a request to LOT-EK to develop a project for a structure.
In order to complete the architectural plan the structure was built with 6 steel shipping containers which are positioned on two levels. That makes a perfect ultra-modern minimalist cube that is in eye catching contrast with the museum’s concrete Marcel Breuer building. The volume for the structure is achieved by using two diagonalically positioned planes. The windows of the new construction were planned in such a way that they could provide a perfect view for the activities outside. Actually, the interior design is very spacious. It includes a triangular mezzanine for the production art process. The studio is really well introduces to the rest of the society passing by. It’s bright yellow exterior cannot be missed.
All 6 containters were repainted and modified at a New Jersey factory. Then they were transported to their new location. Afterwards the construction activities began. And the result…
