To combat the sterility that can occur when your furniture pieces are in the same shape and material, dress up the furniture with well-placed throw pillows and a faux fur throw blanket.
Organize the Space
The living room should not look like a giant white box. If the living room has no character, the house itself is without life. Dividing the space into different functional areas using a silk screen will provide you and your guests with a more intimate space ideal for private conversation and silent contemplation.
To keep the incidentals out of sight, such as remotes, magazines, pencils and other things, the Eames storage unit is essential. Not only will the storage unit hide away the unsightly necessities of the everyday, but the unit will bring in a lovely pop of color. The living room should feel organized, yet lived in. The living room should be designed to uplift the energies of the household yet be calm enough to help you and your guests settle in for an evening of good conversation and fun.
Put a Bird on It
The living room might begin with the furniture, but it shouldn’t end there. Ray Eames designed lovely trinkets to line shelves and adorn surfaces in the home to make it feel attractive and welcoming. After building the Eames Case Study House, Ray designed the entirety of the interior in what has since been termed a collage style. The mixture of colors, textiles, colors and shapes brought the living space to life, as seen here. Ray took items that she and Charles had collected from their travels around the world and displayed them openly in the living room, turning it into an impromptu gallery space. Unlike the average art gallery, however, Ray’s intention was to make the space feel lived-in and welcome.
Enamored by American bird folk art, Ray designed the simplified black bird synonymous with her designs. Perched on top of a shelf or mantle, the black bird is a symbol of the supreme being. Paired with items of your own collection, you can organize your living room around your passions.
Charles and Ray Eames created designs that have continued to transform living spaces. To transform your space, make sure to start with the chair and build from there.
